George, IA Engelina Angie Groen, age 84 of George, IA died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 2nd Bethel Reformed Church in rural Ellsworth with Rev. Gary Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery of rural Ellsworth. Visitation will be Friday, June 1st from 2- 8 PM, with the family present from 6:00 " 8 PM at the Roste Funeral Home of George. Engelina Angie (Gronewold) Groen was born October 8, 1922, on a farm west of George, IA the daughter of Dick and Johanna (Donker) Gronewold. Engelina was raised on the family farm in the George area where she attended Wheeler #4 Country School, graduating from the eighth grade. After her education she worked as a hired farm girl for some of the area farmers, helping raise their children and making meals at thrashing time. Engelina was united in marriage to Delmar Groen on January 17, 1944, at the Bethel Reformed Church Parsonage. The newly wed couple made their home in the rural Ellsworth and rural George areas, where she and Delmar farmed for many years. Engelina was a hard worker tending to her many daily tasks of raising a family, farming, working in the garden, canning, and preparing meals, all of which she loved. Her children will always remember her wonderful homemade bread, goulash and many other specialtys only she could make. She also found time to sew, and made many beautiful quilts and rugs that the family and others will continue to cherish. Engelina always enjoyed a family gathering at the holidays or a summer picnic. She was known by her family as a competitive card player and seldom lost at Monopoly and often was the first to yell BINGO. She and Delmar retired in 1983, and moved into George. In 1984, the city of George celebrated a centennial and many of the dresses worn around town were sewn by Engelina. In May of 2003, Delmar died ending their marriage of fifty-eight years. A short time after Delmars death Engelina entered nursing care at Good Samaritan in George, and later Lyon Manor in Rock Rapids. On Sunday, May 20, 2007, Engelina was admitted to Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids where she died this past Wednesday morning, May 30, 2007, at the age of eighty-four. She is survived by her children, James and his wife, Bonnie Groen of Sibley; Janice Broesder of Sheldon; Marlys and her husband, Marlin Stellinga of Sheldon; Larry and his wife, Marianne Groen of George; Karen and her husband, Tony Wright of Topeka, KS; Donald and his wife, Audrey Groen of George; and Ellyn and her husband, Jeff Johnson of Rock Rapids; along with twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; one brother, John Gronewold of George; and one sister, Jennie Grave of George. Engelina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers.
