Herbert Vande Kop

Rock Rapids Herbert Vande Kop, age 85 of Rock Rapids, IA died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, June 22nd at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Katie Van Veldhuizen and Rev. Dan Haggar officiating. A private family burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday, June 21st from 2:00 " 5:00 PM, with the family present from 2:00 " 4:00 PM at First Reformed Church Fellowship Hall in Rock Rapids. Herbert Vande Kop was born on July 4, 1923 on a farm northeast of Rock Valley, IA to Steve and Jennie (Dirksen) Vande Kop. At the age of 5, he and his family moved to a farm northwest of Rock Rapids, where he lived and continued to farm most of his life. On August 22, 1945, Herb married Mary Palsrok on her parents farm north of Rock Rapids. Herb and Mary had three children, Steve, Doris and Marilyn. Mary passed away on July 16th, 1973. Herb retired from farming in 1982 due to health problems. On April 26, 1992 he married Eleanor Vande Vooren in Rock Rapids. With this marriage, Herb gained a second set of daughters- Marsha, Melanie and Ann. Herb and Eleanor enjoyed their retirement travelling, camping with grandchildren and visiting family and friends. Herb loved golfing, fishing and driving by his farms checking on the crops. Herb also loved his trips to Deadwood. Eleanor passed away on January 31, 2004. Survivors include: son Steve and his wife Carol, daughters Doris Chohon and her husband Vic and Marilyn Jacobson and her husband Art. Three step-daughters; Marsha Martinson and her husband Jim, Melanie Leenderts and her husband Darrell and Ann Boeve and her husband Glen. Grandchildren Lethia and Mark Marienau, Scott and Hope Vande Kop, Monte and Becky Vande Kop, Jason Chohon and Melissa Chohon. Step grandchildren; Justin and Carin Martinson, Jodi and Bryan Lems, Tara and Derek Venenga, Erin and Rex Metzger, Matt and Andrea Boeve, Chris and Jill Malsam, and Laura Leenderts. Great-grandchildren; Steven and Shania Marienau, Alex and Samantha Vande Kop, Grace and Dylan Vande Kop, Lauren Venenga and Seth Marienau. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law John and Grace Schuurman and John and Muriel Palsrok and Jennie Hanson. A very special friend Emma Lou Tolvstad. Herb passed away June 17th at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 85. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Jennie, two wives Mary and Eleanor, two brothers, William and George, and two sisters, Marie Vande Kop and Joan Durband. Blessed be his memory.
