George, IA Carolyn Korthals, age 78 of George, IA died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in George, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18th at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church at George with Rev. Paul Fischer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 17th from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Carolyn Korthals was born August 24, 1930 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to Mahlon and Mantie (Adams) Jamieson. She received her education and graduated from Danville, VT High School. Carolyn continued her education and graduated with a B.A. degree in education from Lyndon State College. She adored children and taught kindergarten for fourteen years. In 1970, she was married to Alfred Korthals in the United Methodist Church in Danville, VT. The couple made their home on a farm south of George, IA from 1970 until moving into town in 1990. She and Alfred were members of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George where Carolyn was a member of the Presbyterian Women. She was also involved with TOPS for many years. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. When family and friends would gather at her home she could often be found entertaining the children by drawing with them, or making cookies, or countless other things that would allow her to touch their lives. They will hold many fond memories of the time they spent with her. She also enjoyed being outdoors gardening and watching birds. Carolyn loved to cook for her family when they would gather at her home. Her wonderful homemade rolls were always very welcome. She and Alfred enjoyed vacationing to the East and West Coasts visiting family members, friends, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. They spent many happy years together. This past Saturday, Carolyn died at the Good Samaritan Center in George at the age of 78. She will be greatly missed. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 38 years, Alfred; stepdaughters, Margery (William) Nieuwendorp, and Patricia (Harold) Berge of Seattle, WA; stepson, Gary (Lori) Korthals of George, IA; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Stubbe of George, IA; brother-in-law, Kenneth Austin of Danville, VT; sister-in-law, Janet Jamieson, of Gainesville, FL; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mahlon Sr. and Mantie Jamieson; sister, Dorothy Austin; brother, Mahlon Jamieson; and twin step-grandsons, Lance and Lonnie Korthals. In lieu of flowers, family wishes memorials to be sent to Good Samaritan Center of George or Hope Haven Wheel Chair Repair.
