Walter Ver Meer

Little Rock, Iowa Walter Walt Ver Meer, age 83 of Little Rock, IA died Friday, July 11, 2008 at the Sanford Hospital of Rock Rapids. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, July 15th at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, IA, with Pastor Scott Burdsall officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Little Rock, with military honors by VFW and American Legion of Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Monday, July 14th from 2 " 8 PM with the family present form 6 " 8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Walter Ver Meer was born on April 5, 1925, the son of John and Jeltje (Elsie) Otten in Rock Rapids, IA. He grew up in Rock Rapids and graduated from Rock Rapids High School. Walt made a career out of the Navy and Air Force serving our country for twenty-three year in WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars. On June 5, 1948, Walt was united in marriage to his first wife Iris Massey in Rock Rapids, IA. He and his family lived all over the world during his career in the military. Some of the places they lived were Japan, Germany and many places in the states. In April of 1977, his wife Iris passed away and Walt remarried Lisa Gable on August 31, 1979. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force he was a Deputy Sheriff for three years and then worked for DGR. Walt was a member of the VFW in Rock Rapids. He enjoyed woodworking, watching the birds and just spending time out doors mowing his lawn. Walt is survived by his wife of twenty-nine years, Lisa Ver Meer of Little Rock, IA; three children: Sandra (husband Jack) Daugherty of Bay City, MI, Randy and (wife Denise) Ver Meer of Harrisburg, SD and Michelle (husband Matt) Vahlsing of Sibley, IA; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Dena Hoogland of Faribault, MN; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his first wife Iris, his parents and twelve brothers and sisters.
