Ocheyedan, Iowa Arthur Art Loerts, age 82 of Ocheyedan, Iowa died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Worthington Regional Hospital in Worthington, MN. Funeral service will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, May 31st at First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, with Rev. Terry Simm officiating. Burial will follow at the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan, with military honors by the Wood-Miller American Legion Post 326 of Ocheyedan. Visitation will be Friday, May 30th fro m 2 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Arthur Daryl Loerts was born on March 5, 1926, the son of Martin and Ruth (Sixta) Loerts in Ashton, Iowa. He grew up in the Ashton and Ocheyedan areas and graduated the eighth grade. He later enlisted in the US Army from May 1945 to October 1946 and his duties included military specialty and military police. As an MP he had the privilege of escorting President Truman. On April 2, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marie Schuller at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. He and his wife farmed in the Ocheyedan area until retirement when they moved in to Ocheyedan in 1991. Art took a lot of pride in farming; one would say it wasnt only his livelihood but also his hobby. He and his wife Marie worked side by side for many years and aside from farming they loved spending time with their children and grandchildren. Art was a member of the Ocheyedan American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, where he served as trustee for a number of years. He also served on the Ocheyedan School Board. Art is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Marie Loerts of Ocheyedan; three children: Sandra Loerts of Mankato, MN, Gary (wife Cindy) Loerts of Worthington, MN and Dennis (wife Amy) Loerts of Ocheyedan; five grandchildren; and one brother, Duane Loerts of Ocheyedan; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister and brother-in-law: Marlys and Hank DeBoer.
