Larchwood, Iowa Mavis Claire McGuire Snyder, age 90, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD and Larchwood, IA died Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the home of a son in Glenwood Springs, CO. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Larchwood, with Father Jeff Schleisman as celebrant. Burial will follow at Larchwood Cemetery in Larchwood, IA. Visitation will be Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Larchwood. There will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. that evening. The Jurrens Funeral Home of Larchwood is in charge of arrangements. Mavis passed away just short of her 91st birthday on September 8, 2012. She was born on the McGuire ranch bordering Smith Falls and the Niobrara River near Valentine, NE on September 12, 1921. She later moved with her parents to Lyon County, Iowa where she graduated from Rock Rapids Elementary School and St. Marys High School in Larchwood, IA. She attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, SD. During World War II she worked at Douglas Aircraft and was a member of the Womens Army Auxiliary Corps. On October 31st, 1945, she was united in marriage to Matt H. Snyder at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. To this union were born five children, Janis Kathryn, Susan Claire, Matthew Lee, Frank Michael, and Thomas Jon. Mavis was employed in the office of John Morrel Company, Fanny Farmer and Western Bank. She and her husband retired in 1985. They spent several months of the year traveling. In 1992, they purchased a condo in Mesa, AZ where they spent six months of the year. Mavis was family oriented; she never forgot a birthday or significant family event. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, fishing and was a former active member of Christ the King Parish in Sioux Falls. Grateful for having shared her life are her loving husband of 67 years, Matt H. Snyder; her sister, Leah (Bubs) Hunter, of Des Moines, IA; children of daughter Susan and her husband Charles T. Reinders: Jill Reinders and fiance, Brett Blankenship of Ft. Worth, Texas, Todd Reinders and his wife Karina, and their son, Tobin of Flower Mound, Texas; three sons: Lee Snyder and wife, Susan, and their children, Jessica and Matt of Glenwood Springs, CO; Frank Snyder and his wife, Michelle, and their children, Kelli, Christian, Hayden of Aberdeen, SD; Tom Snyder and his wife, Sharon, and their children, Alyssa, Cassie, Zach of Aberdeen, SD; along with cousins, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Leo and Tressa (Adkins) McGuire, sisters, Lois Boyle, JoAnn Hjelle, daughters, Janis and Sue (Reinders) and son-in-law, Chuck Reinders.
