Hills, MN Jacob Haan, age 85 of Alpharetta, GA, formerly of Hills, MN died Saturday, October 11, 2014 in Alpharetta, GA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2014 at United Reformed Church in Hills, MN with Rev. Alan Camarigg officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hills. Visitation will be Friday October 17th from 9:30 a.m. to time of service at 10:30 at the United Reformed Church of Hills. In lieu of flowers family wishes memorials be directed to The Cancer Society of America. Jacob was born on November 8th, 1928 in Midland Park, New Jersey to Richard and Alice (Smith) Haan. The family moved to Hills, Minnesota during the depression when his father lost his job for the city of Midland Park. Jacob attended school in Hills and graduated in 1946. He played basketball and was on the varsity team when they won the conference. After graduation he bought a cream route which he ran until called to military service in support of the Korean War in April, 1951. Jacob served in the Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas and Hokido, Japan. He retired in March, 1953. He reached the rank of Corporal. Jacob then bought a vending route from his brother, Richard Haan. Jacob ran this route for more than 50 years. He enjoyed the time in his car and loved meeting and getting to know all the folks along his routes. He was also able to make frequent visits to his dear relatives who lived along the route. Jacob was married to Betty Martinsen on March 17, 1958. They lived in Hills, MN and Sioux Falls, SD. After he retired, they moved to Alpharetta, GA to be near his daughter and grandchildren. Jacob is survived by his daughter Penny and her husband Greg of Alpharetta and two grandchildren, Ethan and Allison Metcalf. His is also survived by two sisters: Henrietta and husband Clarence Hargesheimer and Frances and husband Albert Haak, all of Luverne, MN. Jacob is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, his brother, Richard Haan, his sister, Charlotte Oldenkamp and her husband Bernard Oldenkamp, and his sister and brother-in-law June and Arnold Thorin.
