George, IA Derwood L. Getting, age 87 of Sibley, IA, formerly of Matlock, IA died from complications of Parkinson's disease on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday October 25, 2014 at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George, IA with Rev. Paul Fischer officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church. Derwood Getting was born December 13, 1926 on the family farm near Matlock, IA to Floyd and Dena (Meester) Getting. He attended Dale Township Country School near Matlock and graduated from George High School in 1944. After graduation Derwood helped his father farm until he entered the military in 1952. He was stationed in Korea until his discharge in 1954. Coming home after the war, Derwood again returned to work on the farm with his father. On November 22, 1956 he was united in marriage to Carol Bothof at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Matlock. To this union 4 children were born. Derwood enjoyed wood working, fishing, tinkering around the farm and playing his player piano. Derwood was on the Matlock and Sheldon Elevator Boards for 24 years and was also a township trustee and a boy Scout leader. He enjoyed spending time with his family very much, especially his grandchildren. This past Tuesday, Derwood passed away at Country View Manor in Sibley from complications of Parkinson's disease at the age of 87. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Carol Getting of Sibley, IA; children Greg and his wife Laura Getting of Sheldon, IA , David Getting of Sheldon, IA; Lora and her husband Kurt Prange of Sioux Falls, SD; Steve and his wife Kelli Getting of Mesa, AZ; 6 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren. Derwood was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Dena Getting; step-grandson, Brock Kleinwolterink; 2 sisters-in-law, Martha Kruse and Harriet Bothof; 2 brothers-in-law, George Muller and Henry Kruse.
