Rock Rapids, IA Frank W. Boon, age 81 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids. Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at the Hillside Cemetery in Doon, IA with Rev. Donald Baker, officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Frank William Boon was born August 2, 1933, in Cleveland Township, Lyon County Iowa the son of Martha (Medema) and Arie Boon. He attended country school at Cleveland #5 until 6th grade and then continued his education at Doon public school. Frank graduated from Doon High School in May of 1951, as class valedictorian. Frank grew up on a farm with his family in Cleveland Township and later in Garfield Township. After graduation he farmed at home with his parents for years and also worked for a large number of farmers doing mostly manual labor. Frank began farming on his own in 1960 and remained involved in farming all of his life. Over the years, he acquired land in Lyon County, IA and also in Rock County, MN. During the years he helped several farmers obtain beef cow herds, land purchases and equipment when they needed some help. In 2000, he made some pastureland along the Rock River available to the DNR for wildlife and public hunting. They named the land, Boon Ranch Wildlife Area and as a result the rest of the land became known as Boon Ranch. When Frank's health declined he became a resident of the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids where he died this past Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the age of eighty-one. He is survived by two sisters and their families, several cousins, Arie, Peter, Isaac and Daniel and their families along with several relatives and friends. Frank was preceded in death by his parents.
