Rock Rapids, IA Alvin Sohl, age 85 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, April 20, 2015 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 27th at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Hull, IA, with Pastor Aaron Deutsch officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, April 26th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., with family present from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Sohl was born January 8, 1930 on a farm near Boyden, Iowa, the son of Paul J. and Elise P. (Breuer) Sohl. At an early age Alvin's family moved to a farm north of Hull, IA. He attended Sheridan Township #3 School and graduated from Hull High School in 1948. After his education he worked for area farms as a hired hand. He entered the U.S. Air Force on March 27, 1951, receiving training as a Control Tower Operator. He was stationed in Fairbanks, AK for 2 years. While on furlough, Al and Arlene M. Techen were united in marriage on October 5, 1953 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hull, IA. They moved to Columbus, OH until receiving his discharge in 1955. They were lifelong farmers beginning in 1962, living at various farms. Upon retiring in 1995, they moved into their current home in Rock Rapids, IA. Alvin was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hull, IA. Alvin's passion was working with his hands, doing woodworking and stained glass. Additional hobbies were playing cards (Bridge and 500), fishing and singing. He sang in a men's quartet for many years known as "Bert's Bunch". Most of all he enjoyed time spent with his family. Alvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene M. Sohl of Rock Rapids, IA; a son, Brian Sohl of Omaha, NE; four brothers, Robert (Verna) Sohl of Tulsa, OK, Ken (Elaine) Sohl of Rock Rapids, IA, Harold (Darlene) Sohl of Hull, IA and Lawrence (Kathleen) Sohl of Hull, IA; a sister-in-law, Karen Sohl of Brandon, SD. A brother-in-law Eldon (Shirley) Techen of Sheldon, IA; 2 sisters-in-law, Marlene Techen of George, IA; Louise (Reuben) Winter of Sheldon, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elise Sohl; a son, Kevin Sohl; a brother, Don Sohl; parents-in-law, Arlie and Ella Techen; brother-in-law, Arnold Techen; and three nephews, Michael Sohl, Rodney Winter and Douglas Techen.
