Sibley, IA Elizabeth J. Hatting age 83 of Sibley, IA, died Monday May 4, 2015 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 9, 2015 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley, IA, with Father Alan Reicks and Father Timothy Hogan concelebrating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery in Sibley, IA. Visitation will be Friday, May 8th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. There will be a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Elizabeth J. (Karsten) Hatting was born September 8, 1931 to George and Josephine (Beldt) Karsten on the family farm by Gaylord, Minnesota. Elizabeth's family moved to George, Iowa, then to Little Rock, Iowa and then again to Worthington, Minnesota. Elizabeth graduated from Worthington High School in 1949. After high school Elizabeth worked at the Sibley Hospital as a cleaning lady and in shoe sales at Wolf's department store of Sheldon and Worthington, MN. Elizabeth married Donald M. Hatting on October 15, 1951 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley, Iowa. Elizabeth and Donald made their home in Sibley, where Elizabeth was a homemaker raising her two daughters and son until 1971, when she became a food service cook at the Sibley-Ocheyedan School in Sibley until 1993. Elizabeth was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley, and was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Daughters of America #1540 for over 50 years. Elizabeth served as grand regent and was a very dedicated member. Elizabeth was a very active member of the St. Andrew's Guild, where she served as the circle chairman. Elizabeth was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and the area chairperson for Girl Scout Peacepipe Council. Elizabeth was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Osceola Community Hospital Auxiliary. Her hobbies were, baking, bingo, board games, bowling, cooking and golf. Elizabeth was well known for her delicious cookies and banana breads on the Hatting garage sales. Elizabeth and Donald enjoyed 16 years of wintering in Mesa, AZ, where they were great volunteers for the activities in their park. Since August 2, 2011, Elizabeth and her husband Donald of 63 years shared a room at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa, until Donald passed away on December 24, 2014. She remained at Prairie View and passed away at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. Family was of the utmost importance to Elizabeth. She showed her children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, the value of serving others, and the joy of laughter. Most importantly Elizabeth showed them how to love unconditionally and enjoy life. Elizabeth's children are Betty Jo and husband Daniel Wessels of Sibley, IA, Donna L. Hatting of Maplewood, MN, and Patrick D. and wife Kimberly Hatting of Grinnell, IA. Her five grandchildren, Rebecca and her husband Chet Stofferan of Sibley, IA, Danelle and her husband Joseph Williams of White Bear Lake, MN and Kaylynn Hatting, Ashton Hatting and Liliann Hatting of Grinnell, IA. She had one great grandson, Joseph Williams Jr. of White Bear Lake, MN. Elizabeth is survived by four siblings, Georgia Young (Nelson) of Mission, TX, Marlys Heidebrink (Dale) of Abilene, KS, Dennis Karsten (Sylvia) of Hot Springs, SD, Glen Karsten of Worthington, MN and a sister-in-law, Marcella (Sally) Klein of Ashton, Iowa. She had numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Donald, parents George and Josephine Karsten, sister-in-law Barbara Karsten, and brother-in-law Greg Mathias.
