Sibley, IA Robert C. "Stretch" Schryver, age 93 of Sibley, IA died Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 11th at United Church of Christ Congregational in Sibley with Rev. Larry Laske officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be Sunday, May 10th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Robert "Stretch" Chester Schryver was born November 24, 1921 in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Chester and Anna (Johnson) Schryver. He attended Estherville Community Schools and graduated from Estherville High School in 1939. He continued his education at Estherville Junior College where he played basketball. He was recruited by South Dakota State College to play basketball and was a member of a championship team. He graduated in December of 1943 earning his Bachelor's Degree. He began teaching at Sibley High School in Sibley, IA, where he taught Social Studies and History. He also coached several sports; including basketball, track, football and refereed for several years. He was united in marriage to Jean Perry on March 29, 1945 at her grandparent's home in Canton, SD. Two daughters were born to this union. He then worked at Horton Chevrolet as a bookkeeper and salesman. He worked for the United States Postal service until his retirement. Stretch was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Sibley. He was also a member of the Abu-Beker Shrine Temple in Sioux City, IA and was a Shrine Hospital Dad. He was also a member of the Sibley Masonic Lodge where he served as Grand Mason, and served several years on the Sibley Park Board. His family will remember him as a #1 Dad and who was always there for his girls (Jean, Sue and Dee Ann). He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and would commonly refer to them as "Pea Pickers". He will be remembered as a man who loved and taught others how to love. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a compassionate heart. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jean Schryver of Sibley, IA; two daughters, Suellen Schutte of Sibley, IA and Dee Ann Overman of Hull, IA; four grandchildren, Neil (Shelly) Schutte of Sibley, IA, Abbigail (Aaron) Wych of Grimes, IA, Lindsay (Jason) Van Holland of Sheldon, IA, and Brian (Lacey) Overman of Hull, IA; eight great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Emily, Kaden and Kole Schutte, Gavin and Aspen and Kate. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Anne Schryver of Sierra Madre CA. And brother-in-law Jack Perry of CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Anna Schryver; son-in-law, Doug Schutte; and brother, Edwin Schryver.
