George, Iowa Edith Van Tilburg, age 79 of George, IA died Tuesday, June 9, 2015, after a courageous battle with lung cancer at the George Good Samaritan Society in George, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, June 12th at Tabernacle Baptist Church of George, IA, with Pastor Bryan Anderson and Pastor Oryn Meinerts officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George. Visitation will be Thursday, June 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Edith was born on October 27, 1935 at her family farm south of George, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit and Ida (De Weerd) Korthals. She was raised on the farm and attended Wheeler #6 school. After her education she continued living with her parents and helped area families with household work. On December 23, 1953 Edith was united in marriage to Emery Van Tilburg at her parent's farm. Emery was drafted in the Army Artillery in February of 1953 and was stationed at Fort Sill, OK for eighteen months. After being honorably discharged in March of 1955 they returned to George, where they farmed west of town for ten years and later farmed by Edna for sixteen years. In 1982, Edith and her husband moved to Rock Rapids for three years and then moved back to George where they have lived ever since. Through the years Edith worked various places including 16 ½ years at George Good Samaritan Society, as a Nurse's Aide, Med Aide, and Physical Therapy Aide. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in George and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #404 in George. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, flower gardening, fishing and camping. Emery, Edith's husband, passed away on September 1, 2007. She remained living in their home in George and continued to be active with her community and church family. In October of 2014 Edith was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and entered the Good Samaritan Society in February of 2015, where she remained until this past Tuesday, June 09, 2015. She is survived by five children, Arlys (Larry) De Beer of Ellsworth, MN, Carla (Randy) Deutsch of Sioux Falls, SD, Brenda (Curtis) Gisolf of Rock Rapids, Delinda (Warren) Jansma of Ellsworth, MN and Curtis (Rochelle) Van Tilburg of Sibley; thirteen grandchildren, Mark (Laura) De Beer, Terry (Jennifer) De Beer, Jon-Eric (Sarah) Deutsch, Dan (Dawn) Gisolf, Crystal (Tim) Waltner, Casey Gisolf, Ashley Lemon, Kari (Dustin) Hansen, Jason (Kelsie) Jansma, Wayne (Alicia) Jansma, Trevor Van Tilburg, Kaitlyn (Kelly) Top and Allie Van Tilburg; seventeen great-grandchildren; five brothers, John (Mary) Korthals, Alfred Korthals, Harold (Ardis) Korthals, Edward (Pearl) Korthals and Albert (Johanna) Korthals; six sisters-in-law, Floy Korthals, Velva Korthals, Judina Vanden Berg, Coba Van Tilburg, Delores Van Tilburg and Marjorie Van Tilburg; and many other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Ida Korthals; husband of fifty-three years, Emery Van Tilburg; two brothers, Marian and Ronald Korthals; three sisters, Henrietta Krull, Jeanette Lamfers and Leona Geerdes; and one son-in-law, John Lemon.
