Rock Rapids, Iowa Merlyn L. "Moe" Schubert, age 89 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday August 31, 2015, at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA with Rev. Mark Hansen officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Friday, September 4th from 2:00 to 8:00 with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Merlyn (Moe) Lawrence Schubert was born March 4, 1926 in Lester, IA the first son of Elvin and Katherine (LaFrenz) Schubert. He was raised in Lester, IA attended and graduated from Lester High School in 1943. While in high school he enjoyed playing basketball and he had the pleasure of coaching girls' basketball. He helped his grandfather on the farm and joined the Navy in 1950. He served during the Korean War until 1954. He returned home and married Elizabeth (Matthiesen) on November 11, 1954. He began working for Herb McCormack driving truck and delivering freight. In 1964 Moe and two partners purchased McCormack Transportation, six years later Moe became the sole owner of the company. In 1977 he lost his wife Elizabeth (Betty) to cancer. He remarried Margaret (Winter) Schubert March 15, 1980 and they were happily married for 35 years. Moe was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, a member of Rex Strait Post no. 103 American Legion and Van Anne-Fields Post No. 6960 VFW. Moe's biggest enjoyment was driving trucks and he especially enjoyed the years he owned long haul trucks. That took him to every state in the USA except Hawaii and Alaska. He was an excellent bowler earning many trophies. He is survived by his wife Margaret; three children, Randy Schubert of Sioux Falls, SD, Kathy Fritz of Portland, OR and Steve (Carol) Schubert of Rock Rapids, IA; three step children, Kathy (Mike) Kinney of Phoenix, AZ, Jeff (Camila) Winter of Burnsville, MN, and Kurt (Donna) Winter of Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren, Ryan Fritz, Natalya Fritz, Cammie (Schubert) Kvamme, and Trevor Schubert; six step grandchildren, Kelsey Kinney, Mackenzie Kinney, Samantha Kinney, Ethan Winter, Amber Winter, Catharina Winter; three great grandchildren, Connor and Calla Kvamme, Kaiden Schubert; one sister, Aletha "Tootie" (Bob) Sensenbaugh of Sioux City, IA; and one brother, Donald "Dutch" Schubert of Brandon, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Katherine Schubert; first wife, Elizabeth; son, Michael Schubert; sister, Evelyn and husband Dale Genrich; brother, Lorenz "Larry" and wife Doris Schubert; sister-in-law, Marcella "Marcy" Schubert.
