Larchwood, IA Elmer Metzger, age 96 of Larchwood, IA died Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 15th at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, IA. Burial will follow at the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Lester, IA. Visitation will be Monday, September 14th with family present from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Lester. The Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids is in charge of arrangements. Elmer August Metzger was born October 11, 1918 on a farm near Larchwood, IA, the son of Fred and Karoline (Knobloch) Metzger. He was united in marriage to Mariann Moser on September 24, 1940 in Rock Rapids, IA. He farmed north of Lester from 1940 to 1948. In 1948 he moved three miles north and one mile east of Larchwood where he lived until 1992. They moved to Lester in 1992 and lived there until he became a resident of the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN. Elmer farmed and trucked all his life and hauled his last load of cattle at the age of eighty-five. He had served on the Farmers Mutual Insurance board in Hull, IA and Farmers Co-op Elevator board in Larchwood, IA. Elmer and Mariann became members of the Apostolic Christian Church of Lester in August of 1948. Elmer was a Sunday school teacher for fourteen years. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of seventy-four years, Mariann Metzger of Hills, MN; five sons: James (Lois) Metzger of Hills, MN, Gary (Beth) Metzger of Larchwood, IA, Ray (Kathy) Metzger of Brandon, SD, Don (Pat) Metzger of Hills, MN and Arlyn (Nancy) Metzger of Larchwood, IA; son-in-law, Lynn "Butch" (Kathleen) Doorneweerd of Lester, IA; twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-three great grandchildren; one brother, Roy (Evelyn) Metzger of Bloomfield, IA; two sisters: Lydiann (Carl) Wyss and Pearline Streitmatter both of Washington, IL; three brothers-in-law: Andy Mogler of Eureka, IL, Franklin Moser of Larchwood and Russell Wuthrich of Bloomfield, IA; six sisters-in-law: Alice Metzger of Alvord, IA, Esty Metzger of Hills, MN, Donna Metzger of Rock Rapids, IA, Leona Moser of Rock Rapids, Estelle Leuthold of Hills, MN and Janet Wysong of Hills, MN; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Marlys Doorneweerd; grandson, James Metzger; great granddaughter, Kaylon Metzger; seven brothers and three sisters.
