Rock Rapids, IA Claretta Van Sloten, age 91 of Rock Rapids, IA died Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, Oct. 31st at Faith Baptist Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Jeff Poppinga Officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 31st from 9:30 AM until the hour of service at Faith Baptist Church in Rock Rapids. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed towards Faith Baptist Church of Rock Rapids. Claretta Katherine Van Sloten was born July 16, 1924 near Little Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Klaus and Elizabeth (Kruse) Kruse. She was raised on a family farm and attended country school. As a young lady she provided child care for several families in the Sibley and Little Rock area. She moved to Pierre, SD to study nursing and returned to Rock Rapids where she began a lifelong career as a Nurse's Aide. Claretta was united in marriage to William "Bill" Van Sloten at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. Following the marriage they made their home in Rock Rapids. She worked at the Rock Rapids Hospital for many years and retired in her 70's. On October 8, 2003 Claretta's husband Bill died after 49 years of marriage. She remained active as a volunteer at Central Lyon Community Schools where she was a foster grandparent. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Rock Rapids. She will be remembered for her strong faith and her desire to care for others. She also lived for her kids and grandkids. She is survived by her daughter, Kim (Steve) Samuelson of Oakdale, MN; five grandchildren, David Winger, Gretchen (Kevin) Montgomery, Nicole Samuelson (special friend, Mike Wybierala), Jessica (Eric) Lichman and Aaron Samuelson (special friend, Amanda Evgen); five great-grandchildren Kadin and Layla Montgomery, Robert and Chloe Lichman and Brenna Wybierala; brothers-in-law, Henry Arends; two sister-in-law, Jen Jansma and Eldoris Dykstra; several nieces and nephews; and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Van Sloten; daughter, Mary Jane Winger; three brothers and eight sisters.
