Rock Rapids, IA Lorraine "Babe" Kerns, age 95 of Rock Rapids, IA died peacefully Saturday, October 31, 2015, with her children at her bedside, at Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Father Bruce Lawler as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Holy Name Catholic Cemetery rural Rock Rapids, IA. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Holy Name Catholic Church on Thursday. Lorraine or "Babe" as she was known to all of her friends and family was born on June 29, 1920 in Rock Rapids. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1938 and married Joe Kerns, her high school sweetheart, on August 31, 1941. Babe and Joe made their home in Rock Rapids where she worked at various local businesses throughout her adult life. She was a telephone operator, a sales associate, a bank teller and before her retirement worked as a secretary for Hughes Hoberg Insurance Agency. Throughout her life, Babe was blessed with good health, a strong faith, and loving friends and family. She was always feisty, funny, fashionable and fun loving. Babe and Joe enjoyed spending time with their many Rock Rapids friends. They especially loved playing cards, attending Central Lyon sporting events and taking part in community activities. Babe was an excellent swimmer and diver, bowler, and competitive golfer. She loved watching Iowa Hawkeye football and the Chicago Cubs. She was an avid reader and liked solving jumbles and crossword puzzles. Babe was a devoted and lifelong member of the Holy Name Catholic Church. In 2011 Babe left her home at 902 South Story Street and became a resident of the Rock Rapids Health Centre where she received excellent care and support. On October 7, she was admitted to Lyon County Hospice. Surviving are her 3 children, Douglas (and Karen) of North Liberty, Iowa, Pam (and Jim) Shaner of Westerville, Ohio and Kandi (and Randy) Koll of Rock Rapids, six grandsons and 3 great granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe, her mother, Margaret, sister, Leola and brother, Lee. Blessed be her memory.
