Mike Hoogendoorn , age 62 of Rock Rapids, IA died Friday, March 18, 2016 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday, March24, 2016 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM with family present from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Marlin “Mike” John Hoogendoorn was born July 8, 1953 in Sioux Center, IA to Gilbert and Cornelia (Vanden Brink) Hoogendoorn. He was raised on his parent’s farm by Lester, IA and graduated from West Lyon School. As a young man he worked for Mogler farms. On July 13, 1973 he was united in marriage to Deb (Markle). The couple first farmed southwest of Rock Rapids before moving to their current farm east of Rock Rapids. Along with farming Mike drove truck for years. He started driving a gas truck first for Sherman Oil Company which was later bought out by Smith Oil Company. There after he bought his own truck and hauled grain, livestock, and many other various commodities. On his farm Mike could always be found fixing or building something. He was a jack of all trades and if there was something that needed built he would find a way to do it. Along with tinkering in his shop with various projects Mike raised livestock; hogs, cattle and in his later years, cats. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, woodworking, golfing, and gun club. More recently he found a new passion for smoking meats. Most importantly Mike loved his family. He took great pride in guiding, helping, and teaching his children and grandchildren the right way or wrong way it was still his way. He is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Deb Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids; son, Chad (Teresa) Hoogendoorn and their children, Desta and Danika all of Rock Rapids; son, Bryan Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids; daughter, Lisa (Travis) Hewitt and their children, Trevor, Landen, Zander, and Izabel of Tea, SD; and son, Greg Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids; mother, Cornelia Hoogendoorn of Lester, IA; brother, Jerald Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, IA; sister, Linda Rich of Bel Air, MD; sister-in-law, Wanda Hoogendoorn of Larchwood, IA; sister, Sheryl (Greg) Steuk of Sioux City, IA; brother, Dennis (Joan) Hoogendoorn of Lester, IA; and sister, Connie (Glen) Vande Kamp of Lester, IA; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Hoogendoorn; and brother, Gary Hoogendoorn.
