They accepted and this man drove them and dropped them off at school.  This man was John Dillinger who had just recently robbed a bank in Sioux Falls.  Another family story says that Jesse James stayed in Evelyn’s mother’s grandfather’s barn around the time of his infamous jump across the gorge at Garretson, SD.  On September 26, 1939 she was united in marriage to Ed Heyer in Orange City, IA.  The couple lived the first couple of years in the Larchwood area and then moved to the farm near George where they remained and raised their family.  She loved to garden and was well known for a clean and tidy garden. She enjoyed fishing and camping trips with Ed.  Her cooking skills were cherished by many and it is said no one made a better lemon meringue pie or German chocolate cake.  No one was allowed in the kitchen when Evelyn was cooking except to help with the clean up later.  This past Saturday Evelyn passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in George at the age of 95.  She will be greatly missed.      Evelyn is survived by her husband of 77 years, Ed Heyer; son, Wayne (Connie) Heyer of Stigler, OK, Carol Labadie of George, IA,  Roger (Debi) Heyer of Nissauwa, MN, Monty (Julie) Heyer of Mankato, MN; grandchildren, Michelle Heyer, Donna Heyer, Melinda Packenbush and Daniel Heyer; great-grandchildren, Coleton and Branden Packenbush, and Dean Heyer; other extended family members.      She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dale; half siblings, Ed, Roy, Verna, Irene, Alice; siblings, Harold, Alfred, Walt, Donald,  Frank, Eva and John.
