George, IAVerna Duin, Age 90 of George, IA dies Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Good Samaritan Society in George, IA.Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 20th, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, IA with Rev. Bryan Anderson officiating.Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George.Visitation with family present will be Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 to time of service at 11:00.In lieu of flowers family wish memorials, to be designated at a later date. Verna Mae Duin was born December 25, 1925 on the family farm near George, IA to Henry and Ida (Speaker) Kix. She received her education in a country school near George. Verna’s mother died young, leaving Verna to help her father raise her younger brothers and sisters, resulting in Verna raising two families during her lifetime. On October 26, 1950 she was united in marriage to John Duin in a pastor’s home. To this union were born two daughters, Iva and Laura. The family moved to town in 1958 from the Duin family farm northeast of George. Verna was involved in many things but she especially enjoyed serving her church. Over the years, she served as chairman of the serving group, was in charge of the flowers and plants for 15 years, and helped with the church library for 9 years. Verna served as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the museum board. During her working years, she sold Stanley Products and Tupperware, worked at the George Café, the White Shop, the Bakery and the Corner Rexall. Verna’s husband John passed away in 1986. She remained in her home until two years ago when she moved into the Good Samaritan home in George. She enjoyed the staff and her friends at Good Samaritan. Verna’s health began to fail over the last few weeks and on Tuesday, August 16th she passed away at the age of 90 years. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters, Iva (Curt) Behrens of George, IA and Laura (Bill) Marquardt of Salem, SD; four grandchildren, Paul (Amy) Behrens of Brandon, SD, Matthew (Stefanie) Behrens of Sioux Center, IA, Chris Marquardt of Sioux Falls, SD, and Dana (Chad) Bigge Sioux Falls, SD; seven great grandchildren; siblings, Evelyn Olsen of Rock Rapids, IA, Harold Kix of Rock Rapids, IA, Stanley Kix of Alabama, Larry Dean (Linda) Kix of Rock Rapids, IA; brothers-in-law, Donald Rypkema of Sioux Falls, SD and Herb Duin of Rushmore, MN; sister-in-law, Jeanette Kix of Sibley, IA; and many other extended family members. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ida Kix; husband, John Duin; brother, Frederick Kix; sister, Mavis Rypkema; and sister-in-law, Lucy Kix.
