Ashton, IA Grace Marie Honkomp, just shy of 102 and formerly of Ashton, IA died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton with Father Clinton Honkomp and Father Timothy Hogan as concelebrants. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Ashton. Visitation will be Sunday, October 23rd from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton. There will be a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Grace Marie Honkomp was born on October 30, 1914 in Kranzburg, SD, the daughter of Rudolph and Josephine (Zalmstra) Jellesma. Grace attended catholic school in Kranzburg, SD. On February 17, 1936, she was united in marriage to Edward Honkomp and to this union ten children were born. Grace and Ed lived all their married years in the Ashton area even after Ed passed in 1961; Grace stayed on the family farm until she entered the Beehive and later moved into Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon in March of 2015. Grace was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA, where she was very active in the choir for many years. Her hobbies included making rugs and she was known in the area for her beautiful quilts, 412 to be exact! Besides giving them to her family, she also donated many to the needy through the mission in Sioux City, IA. Grace will be greatly missed. Left to cherish her memory are six children: Richard (Judy) Honkomp of Sheldon, IA, David (Carol) Honkomp of Paullina, IA, William (Connie) Honkomp of Ashton, IA, Thomas (Charlene) Honkomp of Brookings, SD, Janice (Steve) Kruger of Evergreen, CO and Nancy (Alan) Wassenaar of Doon, IA; two daughters-in-law: Charlotte Honkomp of Ankeny, IA, Linda Honkomp of Ashton, IA; one son-in-law, Gerald Block of Sheldon, IA; 37 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Josephine Jellesma; her husband, Edward Antone Honkomp; 3 sons: Robert, Jerald and Daniel; one daughter, Mary Jo Block; grandson, Douglas Honkomp; 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
