Sibley, IA Ann Wiersma, age 87 of Sibley, IA died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, IA, with Father Siby Punnoose as celebrant. Burial will follow at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery in Sibley, IA. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 7th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00, a rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Bertha Ann Wiersma was born May 1, 1929 at Allendorf, IA the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Hodapp) Wiersma. Ann attended country school near Allendorf and graduated from Sibley High School in 1948. Ann started teaching country school and continued her education at Iowa Teachers College and later she graduated from UNI in Cedar Falls. She later taught in Milford and for most of her teaching career she taught for the Charles City school district. In 1994, after forty-three years she retired from teaching and in 2008 she moved to Sibley. She was involved in Alpha Delta Kappa, the Red Hats, Catholic Daughters, a gourmet cooking class and card club. Ann very much enjoyed traveling and visited many parts of the country. She also made trips to Ireland and Italy. She was an avid cat lover and had several faithful companions through the years. In her spare time she would do word searches and read many books. On July 9, 2011 she became a resident of Country View Manor in Sibley where she died this past Monday morning, December 5, 2016 at the age of eighty-seven. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Hanna Wiersma of Sibley, IA; and 32nieces and nephews; 76 great nieces and nephews; 79 great, great nieces and nephews; 8 great, great, great nieces and nephews and one great, great, great, great niece. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Elizabeth; one sister, Clara Johnson, two brothers, Bernard and Jerry Wiersma and one sister-in-law, Maryann Wiersma and four nieces and nephews.
