Shirley Huisman

     Shirley Huisman, age 77 of Rock Rapids, IA died Friday, March 24, 2017 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.        Private family Memorial Service will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids with Rev. Dr. Cliff Hoekstra officiating. Inurnment will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.        Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM with family present from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.      Shirley Ann Huisman was born September 18, 1939 the daughter of Roy and Alma (Garnmeister) Johnson. She was raised on a farm just east of George and graduated from George High School in 1957.    After high school, she moved to Rock Rapids and worked in two different cafes.  On October 18, 1958, she was united in marriage to Arthur Huisman.  To this union four children were born.  Shirley went to school to train as a nurse.  She worked at the Health Centre for several years.  She then managed the VFW for 10 years from 1975 to 1985.  Shirley then went to work at Village Northwest in Sheldon and attended NITC to study human services.  She later worked for C.L.A. in Luverne which was a part of Crippled Children’s School in Worthington.  She worked with the same clients for nine years. Due to ill health, she retired in 1996.  Shirley loved to go to Corral Lanes and ‘volunteer’.  She soon found herself in great demand as many people came for her wonderful food.  Her favorite thing to do was spend time with the Grandchildren and great grandchildren.  They were her world.  She did so much for so many.  She was always willing to watch the kids because she lived to snuggle and spoil the little ones!  This past Friday Shirley passed away at her home at the age of 77.  She will be greatly missed.           She is survived by her children, Terri (friend Kevin Brooks) Kuchenbecker from Madison Lake, MN; Todd (Charlene) Huisman of Rock Rapids; Thomas (Wanda) Huisman of Rock Rapids; and Tamara (Russell)Johnson of Rock Rapids; grandchildren, Greggory (Nicole) Wagenaar of Madison Lake, MN, Christopher (Amanda) Huisman of Rock Rapids,  Amy (Eric) Fluit of Doon, IA, Ashley (Josh) Eben of George, IA, Joshua (Falon) Huisman of Rock Rapids, Britney (Ryan) Schmith of George, IA, TJ Huisman of Iowa City, IA, Michael (Ashley) Huisman of Rock Rapids,  Alyssa (Austin) Sattler of Harrisburg, SD, Jennifer Johnson of Des Moines, IA; 21 great-grandchildren with one on the way; sisters, Marilyn (Jack) Akridge of Maricopa, AZ, Pamela (Glenn) Kooiker of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.           Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur Huisman; infant sister, Dorothy; brother, Roy; son-in-law, James Kuchenbecker.
