George, IA Harley Behrens age 88 of George, IA, died peacefully at at his home southwest of George on Monday, April 17, 2017. Prayer service for family and friends will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hull, IA. Interment will be held in the church cemetery prior to the service. Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hull, IA, with Rev. Aaron Deutsch officiating. Visitation will be Friday, April 21, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Harley Behrens was born January 6, 1929, at George, IA, the fifth child of August Behrens and Marie (Woelber) Behrens. He grew up at George, IA, where he attended country school. Harley served his country in the Air Force from 1951-1957. He was united in marriage to Loretta Ludwig on April 25, 1954, at Calvary Lutheran, Leeds, IA. They made their home on a farm near George, IA. Loretta died after 35 years of marriage. He was united in marriage to Miriam Schutte Donaker on December 26, 1990. They made their home on the farm near George, IA. For most of his life he was a farmer and salesman for Farmers Hybrid and Asgrow Seed. He enjoyed farming, gardening (sharing his produce with many), yardwork, mowing his lawn, driving his gator around on the farm, doing his daily cat chores, supporting the Okoboji church camp, playing pinochle, watching the Minnesota Twins, attending grandchildren’s activities, and Ebenezer Men’s Prayer Breakfast. He served on the FSA Board, Lyon REC Board, Garfield Township Clerk (60 years), St. Paul Lutheran Church Council and Sunday School Board, Boyden Farmers Coop, Good Samaritan Advocacy Board, American Legion Jack Sauter Post 404, Gideons, Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministry, Lyon County Planning & Zoning, and Master Pork Producer. Harley was survived by his wife, Miriam of George, IA; his children, Lori Sebastian (Rod), Falcon Heights, MN; Mark Behrens (Mary), George, IA; Dawn Luitjens (Joel), Windom, MN; step-son, John Donaker (Kristi), George, IA; step-daughter, Laura McMahon (Shane), Lancaster, KY; 9 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brothers, William Behrens (Ruth), Broomfield, CO; Elmer Behrens, Sheldon, IA; sisters, Verna Sohl (Bob) Tulsa, OK; Wilma Ransom (Don), Sheldon, IA and Betty Schisel, Mankato, MN. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, August and Marie Behrens; wife, Loretta Behrens; brothers, Vernon (infant), Walter, Arnold; sister, Frances Dickmann.
