Iona Van Dyke, age 91 of Rock Rapids, IA died Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 6th at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA with Rev. Dan Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, IA. Iona Adell Van Dyke was born December 23, 1925 in Gary, SD to Ray and Nettie (Jibben) Moeller. As a young girl her family moved to Rock Rapids and she graduated from Wilson High School in 1944. On November 2, 1945, she was united in marriage to Herman Van Dyke and the couple made their home in Rock Rapids. She worked at the local grocery store early on in their marriage. Five children were born to this union, Arlyn, Nancy, Rhonda, Brad and Craig. In March of 1981 her husband, Herman passed away after 35 years of marriage. Iona worked for the Central Lyon School District for 46 years. The first 25 years as the cook and head cook, then 21 years as a Foster Grandparent to the kindergarten children of this community. The State of Iowa recognized her for 40,000 volunteer hours to the community. Iona was a giver in a give and take world. She truly enjoyed family gatherings, as well as crocheting and dominoes with friends. Her last words for us was to make family our priority in life. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. In March of 2016 Iona became a resident at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, where she remained until this past Tuesday, May 2, 2017, where she died at the age of 91. Her family will remember their mother and grandmother as a selfless, modest, loving person who gave a wonderful example on how to live life. She is survived by son, Arlyn (J.C.) Van Dyke of Walnut Creek, CA; daughters, Nancy (Larry) Thoelke of George, IA and Rhonda (Craig) Del Valle of Tampa, FL; sons, Brad (Lora) Van Dyke of Highlands Ranch, CO and Craig (Anita) Van Dyke of Marion, IA; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Avis Pauling of Spirit Lake, IA; sister-in-law, Jeanetta Kix of Sibley, IA; nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. Iona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman; and brother, Jerry Moeller.
