Harriet M. Jordan, age 81 of Hills, MN died Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 11th at Hills United Reformed Church, with Rev. Alan Camarigg officiating. Burial will follow at the Hills United Reformed Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 10th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills. Memorials may be directed to the Hills Christian School or the donor’s choice. Harriet Mae Jordan was born March 24, 1936 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Katie (Vermeulen) Hoogwerf. As a young girl, her family moved to Volga, SD. She attended country school and finished her elementary years at the Volga Christian School. In high school, she lived with her aunt and graduated from Southwest Christian School High School in Edgerton, MN in 1954. After high school she took summer classes and began her teaching career in Wisconsin. Later she attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa and completed her Bachelor's Degree in 1965. After college, she continued teaching in Sibley, IA where she met her husband. On August 16, 1968 Harriet was united in marriage to Norman Jordan at the Volga Christian Reformed Church in Volga, SD. After their marriage, they both taught at various schools in the area, until 1972, when they moved to Hills, MN. Three daughters were born to this union. The next 35 years Harriet worked part time at the Hills Christian School and taught many kindergarten Bible classes. She also worked part time for 25 years at Tuff Memorial Home as a nurses’ assistant. She was a member of the Hills United Reformed Church. She enjoyed scrapbooking, traveling, family tree history, visiting family and friends and attending many Bible Studies. Harriet was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2014 and courageously battled the disease until the Lord called her home this past Sunday, May 7, 2017, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Norman Jordan of Hills, MN; three daughters, Beth Jordan of Sioux Falls, SD, Ruth Jordan and Jane Jordan, both of Morton Grove, IL; a brother, Robert (wife Katie) Hoogwerf of Volga, SD; three sisters, Mary Hoogwerf of Huntsville, AL, Dorie (husband Fred) Kooi, of Huntsville, AL and Sandi (husband Jim) Elenbaas of Spokane, WA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Katie Hoogwerf.
