Alice Johnson age 98 of Sibley, IA died Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017 at United Methodist Church in Sibley, IA with Pastor Steve Swenson officiating. Burial will follow at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be Sunday, July 9th from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Alice Ferne Johnson was born May 24, 1919 on the family farm near Goff, KS to Robert T. and Martha Ellen (Porter) McKee. She graduated from Goff High School in 1938. She continued her education attending Teachers College. She was united in marriage to Melvin A. Johnson on July 23, 1939 in the Ministers study at Seneca, KS. To this union two children were born, Rae and Alan. Alice taught in one room country schools. She taught in Goff, KS while Mel was in WWII. Upon his return she taught in Hiawatha, KS. She also taught in a one room school in Sibley after moving to IA. She worked in the Library of the Sibley High School for 10 years. Alice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sibley where she taught Sunday School for many years. Alice loved to knit and crochet for many years. She made afghans for many relatives and friends. She had made afghans for all her great-grandchildren. The family found them neatly folded in the cedar chest while clearing out her house. Each one was labeled with a name for that certain child. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Alice passed away Wednesday, July 5th at the age of 98. She will be greatly missed. Alice is survived by her daughter, Rae Johnson of Sibley, IA; son, Alan (Debra) Johnson of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Wade (Dawn) Van Westen of Milwaukee, WI, Warren Van Westen of Sibley, IA, Jessica Johnson of Greeley, CO, Kelley Ramos of Denver, CO, Casey Brandt of Des Moines, IA; great-grandchildren, Kaeli Schulz, Bryan and Eric Van Westen, Jordan, Joshua and Jaci Van Westen; Dustin Brandt, Amanda Frye, Elizabeth Ramos, Mariah Lucero, Sofia Ramos, Lillee Brandt and Brodey Brandt; great-great grandchild, Oliver Luke Schutz; adopted daughter, Linda Obbink of Sibley, IA and her daughter, Kari Obbink of New Brighton, MN; sisters-in-law, Joan Addington of Kansas City, MO and Bonnie McNiell of Goldon, CO; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Martha McKee; husband of 69 years, Melvin Johnson; infant granddaughter; brothers, Earl, Leland, Glenn, Kenneth and Raymond.
