Hills, MN Sidney "Sid" Berghorst, age 85, of Hills, MN, died Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 11th at Steen Reformed Church in Steen, MN, with Rev. Jeremy Wiersma officiating. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery at Steen, MN. Visitation will be Friday, November 10th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Steen Reformed Church in Steen, MN. Sidney James Berghorst was born July 7, 1932 at Valley Springs, South Dakota, the son of Joseph and Minnie (Kroon) Berghorst. He was raised near Steen, MN and attended school through the 8th Grade. He entered the U.S. Army on November 19, 1952 and served his country honorably in the Korean War. He was discharged on November 4, 1954 and returned home. He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Tinklenberg on February 25, 1955 at Edgerton, MN. The first year they were on the family farm near Steen, before moving to Bellflower, CA. He worked at a Battery Plant, U.S. Post Office and Kool Metal Awning Co. while living in California. The couple returned to the Steen area and Sid began working as a Bulk Milk Truck Driver for Brower Milk Hauling in Leota, MN. Later he worked at Steen Farm Supply and Hills Coop Farm Service, until his retirement. After retirement he worked part-time as a seasonal driver for Farmers Elevator Coop in Lester and Rock Rapids, IA. He was a member of the Steen Reformed Church. He enjoyed gardening, canning tomatoes, woodworking, mowing lawn, going for rides in the country side, camping with family and loved to take on anyone with a game of his favorite card game Canasta. In July of 2016 Sid and Anna Mae moved to the Tuff Memorial Assistant Living Village. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anna Mae Berghorst of Hills, MN; five children, Minnie (husband Melvin) Van Batavia of Steen, MN, Susan (husband Allen) Nuffer of Hills, MN, David Berghorst of Sioux Falls, SD, Betty (husband Calvin) Saarloos of Luverne, MN and Anita (husband Dirk) Burgdorf of Germantown, MD; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Minnie Berghorst; a brother, Henry Berghorst; and sister, Alberta Fikse.
