George, IA Hazel Winter age 92 of George, IA died Sunday, November 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in George, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 29th at First Baptist Church in George, IA with Rev. Mike Hagan, officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery at George, IA. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 28th from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. with the family present from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Hazel Jane (Blau) Winter was born February 6, 1925, at Little Rock, IA the daughter of Harley and Janetta (Hinrichs) Blau. Hazel grew up at Little Rock, IA where she graduated from High School. She continued her education at Mankato State Teachers College in Mankato, MN. She earned a teacher’s certificate and started teaching in a country school near Ellsworth, MN for four years before she was married. Hazel was united in marriage to Henry Winter on September 2, 1947 at Little Rock, IA. They made their home on a farm northeast of George. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in 1945 at First Baptist Church. Hazel was a member of First Baptist Church in George where she taught Sunday School and was past president of Christian Hour Circle. She enjoyed gardening and reading. Whenever there was a need at church, she was willing to help with whatever needed to be done, such as White Cross work or cooking. After her husband of fifty-seven years, Henry, died, she continued to live on the farm. In 2007, she became a resident of the George Good Samaritan Society in George. While in the nursing home, she enjoyed doing word finds, embroidery and helping sort crayons. Hazel died this past Sunday morning, November 26, 2017 at the George Good Samaritan Society in George at the age of ninety-two. She is survived by her children, Twilla (Stephen) Van Hal of Lakefield, MN; George Winter of George, IA; James (Stephanie) Winter of Omaha, NE; Eileen Winter of Sioux Falls, SD; Merlyn Winter of George, IA and Darwin Winter of Arlington, TX; five grandchildren, Justin (Nicole) Van Hal of Dell Rapids, SD; Marisa (Jason) McIlravy of Cambridge, IA; Benjamin Winter of Overland Park, KS, Samuel and Aaron Winter of Omaha, NE; four great grandchildren, Lily and Elise Van Hal and Alik and Mikhail McIlravy; sisters, Hattie Vermaat of Jenison, MI; Grace Averill of New Lenox, IL; Janet (Norman) Decker of Winona, MN; Priscilla Swenson of Luverne, MN and Beverly (Dalton) Patterson of LaCrescent, MN. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Henry, three sisters, Anna Johnson, Wilma Klingenberg and Sylvia Harberts.
