***DUE TO THE WINTER WEATHER THE VISITATION FOR TODAY IS CANCELLED***NOTICE: Larchwood, IA Doris Koch age 94, formerly of Larchwood, IA died Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center in Canton, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood, IA with Rev. Kelly Volk officiating. Burial will follow at the Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, January 22nd from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood, IA. Doris Virginia Koch was born October 18, 1923 in Sioux Falls, SD to Max and Anna (Hohman) Middlen. She grew up in the Larchwood area. After graduating from Larchwood High School in 1941, Doris attended Normal School and was certified as a teacher. She taught children in the Klondike #3 country school. She arrived early on cold winter days to start the wood stove so the building would be warm by the time the children arrived. She tells the story of seeing a well-known old wolf one morning and making the kids stay inside all day. She also spent a summer in San Francisco processing prisoners of war. Doris had many adventures during her life including riding an Indian motorcycle for over 900 miles behind her brother Joel. They traveled from Aberdeen, SD to Stuttgart, AK to see their older brother Orlan before he shipped overseas during WW II. On August 8th, 1946 Doris was united in marriage to Orlo Koch at the First Congregational Church in Larchwood. They made their home on a farm near Larchwood and lived there until 1973 when they moved to town. Doris was a Four Star Sister and long time member of Flessner American Legion Auxiliary in Larchwood. In 1990 Orlo passed away after 44 years of marriage. Doris continued living in Larchwood until 2013 when she moved to assisted living in Inwood. She eventually moved to Fellowship Village in Inwood. This past Thursday after a short illness Doris passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Canton. Doris enjoyed golfing, playing cards, sewing and playing the piano or her organ. She was an excellent cook and loved to make people happy by feeding them. Everyone looked forward to Grandma’s cooking. Doris adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than visits from family. She lived for her family and she will be greatly missed by them all. Doris is survived by daughters, Jeannnine (David) Hoeft of Union, MO and Donna Langenhorst of Larchwood, IA; son, Paul Koch of Larchwood; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Joel Middlen of Larchwood, IA; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orlo Koch; infant brother; brother, Orlan Middlen; daughter-in-law, Sherry Koch; and son-in-law, David Langenhorst.
