Matthew Schreurs age 37 of Larchwood, IA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 31, 2018 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a courageous eight-year battle with brain cancer.Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2018 at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA with Fr. Francis Makwinja, celebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Alvord, IA.Visitation will be Sunday, February 4th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. with the family present at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood. There will be a vigil service at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the church.Matthew John Schreurs was born March 5, 1980, in Sioux City, Iowa to Daniel Schreurs and Stephanie (Dorcey) Schreurs. Matt grew up on a farm outside of Alvord, Iowa and graduated from West Lyon High School in 1998. Following high school, Matt held several sales positions in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before landing a position with Wurth Adams where he spent the last fifteen years doing inside sales. At Wurth Adams, Matt developed close friendships with many of his fellow co-workers and appreciated that the company was extremely supportive throughout his battle with cancer. Matt lived the ultimate bachelor life and loved spending time with the boys – golfing, fishing, hunting, camping. Whenever weather permitted, you could find Matt on the golf course. He regularly played at Meadow Acres and never turned down an opportunity to play a new course or to compete in a tournament. Matt loved watching all sports and enjoyed participating in Fantasy Football leagues with friends. Matt also spent time year-round fishing on area lakes and rivers.Matt was the cool uncle and enjoyed playing with his eight nieces and nephews. He frequently attended their sporting events, birthday parties, and other activities.Matt made his faith a priority throughout his life and he sought to carry out the principals of that faith in his everyday life. His faith was so inspired by his grandpa Laurence that in 2007, he had the word ‘faith’ in his grandpa’s handwriting tattooed over his heart. Matt leaned on his faith heavily when in March, 2010, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Matt fought a brave battle with the disease for the next eight years, never complaining about his fate but continued to rely on his unwavering faith.Grateful for having shared his life are his mother, Stephanie Schreurs, Larchwood, IA; his father, Daniel (Rachel) Schreurs, Alvord, IA; his brother, William (Samantha) Schreurs, Alvord, IA; his sisters, Theresa (Mason) Mehrman, Harrisburg, SD; Jacqui (Bailey) Grotewold, Alvord, IA; Mary Schreurs, Davenport, IA; step siblings, Alex (Jazmine) Koedam, Rock Valley, IA; Austin (Erica) Koedam, Rock Valley, IA; Cassidy Koedam, Des Moines, IA; four nephews and four nieces; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Laurence and Peggy Schreurs, and Joseph and Patricia Dorcey.
