Sibley, IA Jackie “Jack” Hurd age 85 of Sheldon, IA, formerly of Sibley, IA died Monday, February 12, 2018 at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, IA. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 16th at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, with Reverend Luke Schouten officiating. Burial will follow the lunch at the Ransom Township Cemetery rural Rushmore, MN, with military honors by George E. Mudge American Legion Post No. 324 and William F. Allard VFW Post No. 7373. Visitation will be Thursday, February 15th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Jackie Lee Hurd was born on December 1, 1932, the son of Alfred and Verna (Johannsen) Hurd in Hendricks, MN. He grew up on a farm near Lake Benton, MN and attended country school there. He worked on the family farm for a time then later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1953 to 1955, and part of that time he was stationed overseas in Darmstadt, Germany. On December 14, 1957, Jack was united in marriage to Frances Ketel at the Methodist Church in Bigelow, MN. The couple made their home in Lake Benton, MN for a couple of years then moved to Sibley, IA. To this union three daughters were born Lynn, Jo and Lana. Jack worked various jobs throughout his life such as the Creamery while they live in Lake Benton, AMPI for thirty-one years until retiring. Jack and his wife also owned and operated Hurd’s Camper Sales and Rental. He was an avid woodworker, Jack enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He also enjoyed playing cards. He and his wife liked to travel, and they wintered in Arizona for several years. Jack loved spending time with his family, especially going to his grandchildren’s events. Jack’s wife Frances passed away unexpectedly on August 20, 2008 after almost fifty years of marriage. In June of 2014, Jack moved to Fieldcrest in Sheldon, IA where he lived until his passing this past Monday, February 12th at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, IA. Jack is survived by his three daughters: Lynn (Ellison) Hayenga of Sioux Falls, SD, Jo (Bruce) Stegemann of Matlock, IA and Lana Hibma of Sibley, IA; six grandchildren: Elyssa (Jeremy) Houtsma, Bryan Hayenga, Sara (Lance) De Jong, Jenna Stegemann, Jason Stegemann and Elizabeth Hibma; two great grandchildren: Anastasia and Reagan Houtsma; Jack’s dog, Cinnamon Marie; six siblings: Delores (Ray) DeVos of Taunton, MN, Dale (Linda) Hurd of Melrose, MN, Gary (Terri) Hurd of Marshall, MN, Lila (Alvin) Hammerschmidt of Wabasso, MN, Darlene Bontjes of Breckenridge, MN and Brent (Donna) Hurd of Sheldon, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Hurd; parents, Alfred and Verna Hurd, son-in-law, John Hibma and sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Clem Sik.
