George, IA Marcia Martens Rosenboom age 64 of George, IA died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Celebration of Life/Visitation will be Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at The Good Knight in George, IA. Marcia Ann Martens Rosenboom was born April 2, 1953 in Sheldon, IA the daughter of Art and Frances (Dilly) Martens. Marcia was raised on the family farm south of George with her older sister, Janice. Marcia was always an animal lover, spending many hours riding horses, dressing her cats, and playing with her dog. Her best friend Lynette remembers Marcia as an early morning person, even as a child. When they had sleepovers Marcia would insist they get up early to see the sunrise. Marcia attended George Community School, graduating in 1971. She attended Augustana College, graduating in 1975 with degrees in English and Philosophy. She later obtained her Master’s Degree, also from Augustana College. Marcia taught English in Paullina, IA for one year 1975 – 1976. On May 14, 1976, Marcia married Joel Rosenboom in front of the lilacs on her parents’ farm. Marcia and Joel made their home near Brandon, SD before moving to an acreage near Larchwood. Marcia worked for the Lyon County Reporter in Rock Rapids for two years, writing articles and proofreading the newspaper. She also substitute taught at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1979, Marcia began teaching high school English at George Community School in room 206, the same room she had studied in with Mrs. Summa. In her 33-year career, Marcia “taught beyond the pages of the book,” impacting thousands of George-Little Rock students with her exuberance and love of language and literature. April 23 was a red-letter day for Marcia, and her students were all very aware of its significance: William Shakespeare’s birthday. Her co-workers remember Marcia keeping in-services interesting…and maybe longer. In 1989, Marcia and Joel moved to the Martens family farm south of George. Through the years, Marcia and Joel enjoyed raising and showing American Saddlebred horses for Marcia’s parents, Art and Frances. Marcia and Joel enjoyed traveling extensively; they visited Europe many times and traveled to all 50 states. Marcia’s favorite destination was England – the land of Shakespeare. Marcia enjoyed nature everywhere she went as chronicled by the many photos she took. Marcia and Joel’s last adventure was August 21, 2017 when they took Jack and Carly to Nebraska to view the eclipse.
