George, IA Nellie Bruns age 105 of George, IA died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in George, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1st at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, with Reverend Oryn Meinerts officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 28th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Nellie Bruns was born on November 5, 1912 on a farm in Lyon County, IA, the daughter of Sweer and Anna (Wilts) Johnson. She was one of ten children in her family. Nellie grew up in the George and Little Rock area and attended country school there. On September 11, 1935, Nellie was united in marriage to Ben G. Bruns in George, IA. After their marriage they lived in George for a time and later moved to a farm near George. To this union five children were born: Douglas, Dorothy, Arthur, Leland and Ruth. The couple farmed until 1963, when they moved back into town. During the time they lived in town Nellie worked at Charlie’s Market. Nellie was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, where she was very active. She would attend bible study and known for washing the dishes and taking home and washing the dish towels after each of their meetings. Some of her hobbies included: quilting, crocheting, and embroidery. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her “Fried Potatoes” and “Homemade Bread”. Nellie also loved to play Rummikub. Nellie was also very active while she was in the nursing home, where she would help fold laundry. Nellie is survived by her five children: Douglas G. (Janet) Bruns of Hixson, TN, Dorothy (Les) Wessels of Little Falls, MN, Arthur G. Bruns of Charlotte, NC, Leland Ben (Brenda) Bruns of Sioux Falls, SD and Ruth Ann (Farid) Elhami of Laguna Hills, CA; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sweer and Anna Johnson; husband, Ben G. Bruns; four brothers; five sisters; and two granddaughters, Tamara Ann Bruns and Darla Wessels Jennings.
