Betty Smith age 83 of Larchwood, IA died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Jurrens Funeral Home in Larchwood, IA with Rev. Daniel Deardoff officiating. Burial will follow at Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the time of service and fellowship will follow the committal at the American Legion Hall in Larchwood on Tuesday, March 6th. In lieu of flowers family wish memorials be directed to the Larchwood Legion Auxiliary. Betty Lea Smith was born on March 3rd, 1934 to Edward and Irene nee Pruitt Anderson in Sioux Falls, SD. Betty was baptized in the Larchwood Community Church where she was also confirmed on April 21, 1946. She attended Larchwood Elementary and Larchwood High School, graduating in 1951. Betty received her LPN nursing degree from George C. Wallace Technical School in Dothan, Alabama. Betty served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corp for 4 years. She met her future husband Charles (Bud) Smith, Jr. while working at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Waukegan, IL. They were married on February 2, 1957 in Waukegan, Illinois. She worked as an LPN for 25 years, after serving in the Navy. Bud and Betty lived in various locations while Bud continued to serve in the military including: Fort Eustis, Virginia; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Riley, Kansas; and Fort Carson, Colorado. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Larchwood, Iowa. While in Larchwood, Betty served on the Larchwood City Council and as President of the Larchwood Legion Auxiliary for several years. She enjoyed bowling as a hobby. She was a member of English Lutheran Church Larchwood, Iowa. Bud and Betty moved to an apartment in Brandon in 2010. Betty lived at South Ridge HealthCare in Sioux Falls for approximately 4 years. She passed away at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on February 25th, 2018 at the age of 83 years 11 months and 22 days. Betty is survived by her husband Charles (Bud) of Salem, South Dakota, her nieces Bonnie Kramer and Pam Schreurs; sister-in-law Betty Anderson; sister-in-law Karen Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Howard and Lois Smith; sister-in-law and brother-in-law June and Darwin Clark; nieces and nephews Dennis Westphal; Charles Westphal; Thomas Westphal; Douglas Smith; Jeffrey Smith; Michelle Sherwin; Andrew Smith; Eric Smith; Nancy Gortney; Kevin Clark; Sheila Thirion; family friend Arnie Bjork; as well as many other friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Joe Schreurs; her brother Jay Anderson; nephews Jay Schreurs, and Mickey Anderson; and niece Lisa Anderson. Betty was also proceeded in death by sister-in-law and brother-in-law May and Kenneth Westphal; brother-in-law Earl Smith and nephew/godchild Jon Smith.
