Alan Norman Maurer

Larchwood Alan Norman Maurer age 72, of Larchwood, IA died Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Royale C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 17th at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood, IA, with Pastor Tim Voigt officiating. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Lester, IA, with full military honors. Public visitation will be Monday, May 16th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood. Jurrens Funeral Home is in charge of services. Alan Norman Maurer was born August 13, 1949, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Herman and Eleanor (Berg) Maurer. He was raised near Alvord, Iowa and graduated from West Lyon High School in in 1968. After high school Alan entered the U.S. Navy on June 8, 1968. During his military career he earned the rank of A E 5 and was stationed in Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Azores, Spain, and Reklavik, Iceland. Alan was united in marriage to Norma Kuyper on August 27, 1971. They lived in Lisbon Falls, ME while Alan was active duty and returned to Lester, IA after he received his honorable discharge on December 8, 1972. In 1977 they moved to a farm near Larchwood, IA where he farmed and worked as Air Manager for the United Parcel Service. Alan worked at Sioux Falls Ford as a saleman and retired in 2015. Alan was a member of the United Church of Christ in Larchwood, the Edward Bouwman Post No. 683, American Legion in Lester, IA, Rock Rapids Gun Club, Sioux Empire Ford Club and the National Rifleman’s Association. He had a passion for Ford Mustangs, guns. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 50 years, Norma Maurer of Larchwood, IA; two sons, Mathew (Laurie) Maurer of Sioux Falls, SD and Steven (Taryn) Maurer of Larchwood, IA; seven grandchildren, Masen Maurer, Cole Kruse, Gavin Kruse, Hannah Kruse, Kaylen Kruse, Madisen Maurer and Mara Maurer; two brothers, Paul Maurer of Hermosa, SD and Jerry (Barbara) Maurer of Larchwood, IA; a sister, Karon (Denny) Kramer of Larchwood, IA; two sisters-in-law, Donna Maurer of Larchwood, IA and Donna Maurer of Ankeny, IA; along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Maurer; parents, Herman and Eleanor Maurer; four brothers, Harlan, Gene, Robert, Roger Maurer; a sister, Marilyn Ripperda, parents-in-law, Marvin and Alice Kuyper; two brothers-in-law, Larry Ripperda and Scott Hoekstra, sisters-in-law, Mavis Maurer, Elaine Ekle; nephew, Wade Ekle; and niece, Kathleen Maurer.
