Alvin Schettler, age 96, of Larchwood, IA died Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood.
Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids, SD.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 19th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood. There will be a vigil at 7:00 PM.
Alvin Schettler was born on July 27, 1923 on a farm east of Larchwood, IA, the son of Frank and Mary (Schreurs) Schettler. He lived his entire life in Larchwood graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1941. He farmed with his brother, Francis for many years. Alvin met Verena Anderson at a dance at the Arkota and after a four-year courtship, they married on September 12, 1970. To this union Alvin inherited nine children and fifty-one grandchildren.
He and Verena had many trips including two to Rome, Italy and they wintered in Texas for thirty-six years. Alvin and Verena loved to dance especially the Polka. They belonged to the Polka Club in Sioux Falls, SD for many years. Alvin liked to play pinochle too.
Alvin is survived by his six daughters, Betty (Don) Bunkers of Dell Rapids, SD, Alice (Bob) Doherty of Larchwood, IA, Mary Ellen (Arvin) Gilbertson of Lake Wilson, MN, Judy (Donald) Jordan of NYC, NY, Karen (Lyle) Oveson of Sun City West, AZ and Jeanne (Dennis) Carder of Loveland, CO; son, Lee (Marlys) Anderson of Trent, SD; two sisters, Emma Lucas of Inwood, IA and Clara George of Rock Rapids, IA; fifty-one grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and many niece, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Schettler; wife, Verena Schettler; daughter, Alverda Huntimer; son, Curtis Anderson; sisters, Margaret De Smet, Loretta Roemen, Bertha Kramer, Imelda Anderson and Darlene Schettler; and brothers, Leo, Francis and Martin Schettler.
