Arlo Mae Weerheim

     Arlo Mae Weerheim, age 92 of Rock Rapids, IA died on Friday, July 26, 2019 at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.

     Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 31st at the First Reformed Church of Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Haggar and Curtis Weerheim officiating.  

     Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

     Visitation will be Wednesday, July 31st from 12:00 until the hour of service at the First Reformed Church of Rock Rapids.

     Arlo Mae (Hoogeveen) Weerheim was born on May 1, 1927 in Lester, Iowa. Her parents were Harry and Rhoda (Jongerius) Hoogeveen. Arlo graduated from the Lester School system. She went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. until the death of her mother. She then stayed home to take care of her father and four brothers where she became a great cook, baker, and housekeeper. She was also employed as a clerk at the Lester Bank. 

     She married Ed Weerheim on February 14, 1952 in Lester, IA. They had four children and lived in the Rock Rapids area all of their adult life. Arlo was a farm wife helping Ed with chores and farm work. She taught piano lessons to many area children and also babysat for families, who are still close friends. Arlo played piano and organ at church, along with being a Bible Study and devotional leader in RCWM and the Dorcas Circle. Arlo worked as a cook for Central Lyon School, at the Drive Inn, Lyon Manor Nursing Home and was a cook and manager of the local Dinner Date Program. Her cooking skills included apple pies, cinnamon rolls and fried chicken at Sunday noon family dinners. Arlo was on the Lyon County Fair Board, where she organized the Lyon County Queen Contest. She was a member of the Merrill Pioneer

Hospital Auxiliary. Arlo was a 4-H Leader for years teaching sewing, canning and baking skills to area youth.

     On November 8, 2006 Arlo’s husband of fifty-four years, Ed passed away. She continued to live in Rock Rapids until August of 2015 when she entered the Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA, where she remained until her death this past Friday, July 26, 2019.

     She is survived by four children, Bonnie Nail of Rock Rapids, Curtis (wife Sherri) Weerheim of Lebanon, Ohio, Carol (husband Ray) Patch of Sioux Falls, SD; and Dennis (wife Theresa) Weerheim of Hawarden, IA; ten grandchildren; Casey Weerheim (wife Jen) of Sioux Falls, SD; Ranita VanVuuren (husband Jay) of Freeman, SD; Corrie Weerheim of Orlando, FL,  Davis Weerheim, of Lebanon; OH, Nick Stellinga, (wife Kathi) of Sheldon, IA; Kate Hansen (husband Dustin) of Sioux Falls, SD; Kayla Engleman (husband Jason) of Rock Rapids, IA, Rachel Carlson (husband Jeff) of Dakota Dunes, SD,  Dana Peschon (husband Mitch) of Rock Rapids, IA, and Justin Nail (wife Jessica) Williamsburg, IA; 17 great- grandchildren, with two more on the way; brothers, Roy Hoogeveen of Lester, IA, and Robert (wife Esther) Hoogeveen of Sheldon, IA; two sisters-in-law, Lila Hoogeveen and Chris Vonk; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

     Arlo was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Henrietta Hoogeveen; husband, Ed Weerheim; two brothers, Marvin and Jay Hoogeveen; and two sisters-in-law Donna and Wilma Hoogeveen.
