Bernice G. Mallette, age 90 of Doon, IA died Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in George, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 10th at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, IA, with Rev. John Pea officiating.
Private burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, IA.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 9th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of George.
Bernice Geraldine Mallette was born on April 4, 1928 in Hawarden, IA, the daughter of Ira and Maude (Varverka) Van Buskirk. She grew up in Hawarden and later graduated from Hawarden High School in 1946. After graduating Bernice attended Iowa State University, where she got a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Home Economics.
On July 1, 1951, Bernice married Don Mallette in Hawarden, IA. To this union two children were born, Douglas and Sherry. The couple made their home in Hawarden from 1951 to 1954, when they moved to a farm near Doon, IA. Bernice taught Home Economic in Sioux Center, Hawarden, Rock Rapids and for the longest time at the George Community School from 1963 to 1983. She not only loved teaching cooking and sewing class, but they were a couple of her hobbies she enjoyed doing at home. She also liked to travel with her husband and family. A couple fond memories were of their travels to Alaska and Canada. Especially driving up the Alcan Highway which her father and brothers company helped construct. After her retirement in 1983, Don and Bernice wintered in South Padre Island, Texas and in 1995 they made their winter home in Alamo, Texas until 2015.
Bernice is survived by her husband of 67 ½ years, Don Mallette of Doon, IA; son, Douglas (Sandi) Mallette of South Sioux City, NE; daughter, Sherry Clausen of Doon, IA; two grandchildren: Reed (Amy) Tompkins of Rockledge, FL and Megan (Robert) Neal of Morongo Valley, CA; three great-grandchildren: Ella and Vylet Tompkins and Lily Neal; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Maude Van Buskirk; two brother, Raymond and Warren Van Buskirk; and one sister, Beverly Cook.
