     Bertha DeVries age 97, of Grand Island, NE formerly of George, IA died Sunday, October 31, 2021, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island, NE

     Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at George, IA with Pastor Jeremy Winter, officiating.  Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George, IA.

   Visitation with the family present will be Thursday, November 4^th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

     Bertha Elizabeth De Vries was born May 18, 1924 to Ferdinand and LaVella (Beldt) Karsten in Lyon County, Iowa.  She attended country school. After the 8^th grade, Bertha stayed home to care for her siblings after her mother’s passing. On January 16, 1947 Bertha was united in marriage to Jacob (Jake) De Vries.  Together they lived in rural George and raised three children. Jake passed away in January 1968.

     Bertha was a seamstress. She worked at Sheldon Drape & Blind and Corner Rexall in the past. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in George. In the past she was a part of the Red Hat Society. She was very creative and talented when it came to cake decorating, making quilts, sewing, and knitting. Many of her family members have some of her many creations in their homes, whether it be a quilt or a knitted piece. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles on the computer, playing cards, and loved to play any game with her family.

     Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Eileen (Dean) Harms of Grand Island, NE, Donna De Vries and Ann Bancroft of La Vista, NE, Cyndi (Mark) Roof of Littleton, CO; two grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild on the way; sister Hazel Johnson of Marshall, MN, Carol Soward of Sioux Falls, SD; along with many extended relatives. 

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; brother, Clifford Karsten; sister, Mary Ellen Stafford; and an infant son.
