Betty Jeanette Dagel

Sibley, IA

     Betty J. Dagel, 88, passed away peacefully in her home while surrounded by family Thursday January 26, 2023, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

     Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 1st at the United Church of Christ in Sibley, IA, with Pastor Maggie Gisch officiating.

     Burial will follow at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley, IA.

     Visitation will be Tuesday, January 31st from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

   

     Betty Jeanette (Harris) Dagel was born on May 8, 1934, in Orlando, Florida the daughter of Raymond Frank Harris and Nezzie Lee Harris. She was the youngest of 7 children.

     She attended public school in Jacksonville, Florida, which was segregated at that time, through the 8th grade. She then went to work to support her mother who was battling bone cancer.

     She met her husband Edward John Dagel while he was stationed at the Naval base in Florida, and she was working at Prudential Insurance. They were married August 10, 1956, in Macon, Georgia by her brother James who was a southern Baptist minister. Shortly after marriage she and Edward moved to Sibley, Iowa to the farm where they resided their entire married life.

     Betty was a member of the United Church of Christ and was Sunday School Superintendent for several years as she had a great love of children. She loved her garden, her numerous flowers, and plants. While raising her own children she always had a basement full of canned goods she had made. She also enjoyed sewing, having made several gifts for family and friends throughout the years and was an avid cook and baker as well. She also took it upon herself to obtain her GED as she valued education.

     In the past Betty worked at the truck stop near the airport, Johnny’s Drive-In, and also at Sibley Specialty Care.

     Betty was that one in a million truly loving and caring soul who brightened all the lives she touched. She was greatly loved by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

     She is survived by her husband Edward of 66 years, her four sons: Gerald (Elizabeth) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Stephen (Kate) of Sibley, Iowa, Robert of Sibley, Iowa, and Tim (Tricia) of Sheldon, Iowa. ten grandchildren; Monica (Cory) Murray, Stephanie (Sean) Wolf, Mackenzie, Jed, Leonard (Danyel), Jessica, Jacob, Kaitlin, Bradi, and Noah. Eleven Great-Grandchildren, and one Great-Great-Grandchild as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, 6 brothers-in-law, 5 sisters- in -law, and one infant grandson Jesse Dagel.
