     Beverly “Bev” DeSmet age 88, of Larchwood, IA passed away on August 8, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

      Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 14th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood, with Father Sunny Dominic officiating. Burial will follow at Larchwood Cemetery.

      Visitation will be Tuesday, August 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with family present at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood. Also there will be a 4:00 PM vigil service at the church.

      Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids is in charge of services.

      In lieu of flowers, the DeSmet family asks memorials be directed to the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood, IA.

      Beverly Jean DeSmet was born March 1, 1936, in Humbolt, SD, the daughter of Ernest and Gertrude (Hanisch) Hoefert. She was raised in the Humbolt area and attended Wall Lake Gilmore Country School #82. She graduated from Humbolt High School in 1954. After her high school years, she worked as a nanny, at Modern Cleaners, Sunshine Grocery Store and Austad’s Store. 

      Bev was united in marriage to Cletus F. DeSmet on September 13, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Larchwood, IA. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, SD for a short time, then moved back to Larchwood. Four children were born to this union, Patty, Dan, Bob and Scott. Later in life Bev began her dream job at Knobloch’s Greenhouse, working as a garden associate. She also enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning, baking and fishing. She and her family were blessed with many trips to “End of the Road Resort”, where she enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family. She also volunteered with several community events and active with St. Mary’s Church. 

      On December 5, 2021, Bev’s husband Cletus died. Following Cletus’s death, she continued to stay active with church activities and spending time with her close friends and family.

      Following a brief illness, Bev died on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the age of 88. She is survived by her four children, Patty (Randy) Klein of Sibley, IA, Dan DeSmet of Elkton, SD, Bob (Shirley) DeSmet of Alvord, IA and Scott (Brenda) DeSmet of Sioux Falls, SD; twenty-three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; sister, Barb Viet of Madison, SD; sisters-in-law, Helen Hoefert of Hartford, SD, Jane Heirigs of Larchwood, IA and Audrey DeSmet of Hills, MN; brothers-in-law, Don (Susie) DeSmet of Canon City, CO and Dean (Nancy) DeSmet of Omaha, NE; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Gertrude Hoefert; husband, Cletus F. DeSmet; daughter in-law, Laurie DeSmet, Clete’s parents, Ted and Emma DeSmet, sister, Darlene (Bill) Groeneveld; brother, Ernie Hoefert; in-laws, Alvin and Darlene DeSmet, Bob and Veronica Wiens, Harold Heirigs and Gene DeSmet.
