Beverly Hoing, age 84 of George, Iowa died Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society of George.
A Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m., Saturday, September 9 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, Iowa with Reverend Ernest L. Gardner III, officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery of George.
Visitation will be Friday, September 8 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to be directed to the George Public Library, 119 S. Main Street, George, IA 51237.
Beverly Joan Hoing was born on April 9, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Erwin and Marian (Booth) Groth. As the daughter of a Lutheran minister, she grew up in Michigan, North Dakota, Iowa, and South Dakota and graduated from Pomeroy High School in Iowa. After graduating, she attended Wartburg College, and graduated from Northern State College, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis on English and History. She also earned continuing education credits in library science and other education topics from Sioux Falls College, Northwestern College, Northwest Iowa Technical College, and University of Northern Iowa.
On August 17, 1963, she married Michael Hoing in Westbrook, Minnesota. They initially lived in Aberdeen, South Dakota and then moved to George, Iowa, in 1964. Bev was a high school English and Literature teacher in George for over 34 years. She treasured her friendships with the faculty and staff and celebrated the students’ successes in high school and beyond. Bev was active in the community including community plays, Easter and Christmas cantatas, the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the George Museum, and on various committees. She was also a member of the education sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, and a proud member of the Red Hat Society. Bev loved sharing lots of laughter and practical jokes with her family and friends. Her passions were reading, music, playing cards, and in the early years traveling and camping.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of sixty years, Michael Hoing of George, Iowa; two sons, Jeff (Kendra) Hoing of Lansing, Kansas, and Greg (LaVonne) Hoing of Guthrie Center, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jaci Hoing of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jenna Hoing of Kansas City, Missouri, Cole (Sarah) Hoing of Topeka, Kansas, Cael Hoing of Guthrie Center, Iowa, and MaKayla Hoing of Iowa City, Iowa (fiancé Caleb Lovelace); two siblings, Thomas (Ricardo) Groth of Long Beach, California, Nancy (Grace) Groth of Campbell River, British Columbia Canada; many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Erwin, and Marian Groth; brother and sister-in-law, Fredrick (Pat) Groth; mother and father-in-law, Tony (Ruth) Hoing; and brother in-law and sister-in-law, Maynard (Joan) Hoing.
