Carol Luitjens

     Carol Luitjens age 72 of George, Iowa died Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from complications with chemotherapy treatment.

     A funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM, Monday October 5, 2020 at Hope Reformed Church in George, Iowa with Reverend Al Honken officiating.  Burial will follow the service at the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery.

     Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, October 4^th with the family present at Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

     Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

     Carol Jean Luitjens was born June 4, 1948 to Oltman (Ollie) and Vera (Sheneberger) Akkerman in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She grew up in rural Rock Rapids and attended country school until the 6^th grade. She then attended Central Lyon for 7^th through 9^th grade, and graduated from West Lyon High School in 1966. In October of 1973 she married Glenn Blum at the Congregational Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa. To this union daughter, Michelle was born.

     Carol worked many years as a clerk. She worked at Rexall Drug Store, Rice’s Grocery, Sunshine, Popkes convenience store, Al’s Foodline and the Total Stop grocery store.

     Carol married Vince Luitjens on August 7, 1998 at Hope Reformed Church in George, IA. The couple made their home in George.

   She served as a board member of the George Bicentennial Museum. Her church was very important to Carol. She was a member of the Hope Reformed Church in George and also belonged to the Circle of Friends. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, plastic canvas, baking bars for family, taking care of her dog, Skye and church functions.

   Carol is survived by her husband, Vincent Luitjens of George, IA; sister, Bonnie Samuelson of Quimby, IA; niece, Wendy Samuelson of Des Moines, IA; mother-in-law, Beverly Luitjens and many other extended family members.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Vera Akkerman; first husband, Glenn Blum; daughter, Michelle Blum; brother-in-law, Tom Samuelson; father-in-law, Marlyn Luitjens; and nephews, Gavin and Kayden Huisman.
