Cecil Roth age 89 of Ashton, Iowa died Monday, March 17, 2025, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA, with Father Siby Punnoose and Father Timothy Hogan as concelebrants. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ashton, IA.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Cecil Roth was born on June 15, 1935, in Ashton, Iowa, the son of Louis and Margaret (Staudacher) Roth. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Ashton and graduated in 1953. Cecil served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 with brother Clete. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Fort Sill, OK.
Cecil returned back to Ashton in 1956. His brother Kelly brought him to Sioux Falls to go dancing, and that is where he met his wife Lois on December 20, 1960. They were united in marriage on August 18, 1962, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived on the family farm. Cecil worked construction for a few years and farmed until his retirement.
Cecil was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ashton American Legion Post 290, and a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed farming, Iowa Hawkeye Sports, Roth family hunts, John Deere, and loved to tell stories. He always enjoyed having tootsie rolls, 7-UP, and M&Ms. He was a prayer warrior with devout faith. His family remembers him as a man who loved God, his country, and his family. Fondly remembered for his wit, ability to tease to get a smile or laugh and his endless stories to anyone that would listen.
Thankful for sharing his life are his wife, Lois of 62 years; daughter, Nancy (Gary) Lien of Brandon, SD; daughter, Sheila of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Mackenzie Lien of Sioux Falls, SD, Kali Lien of Brandon, SD, Garrett Lien of Fayetteville, NC; brother and sisters; in-laws; nieces, nephews; and many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Margaret; son, Steven; in-laws, Lawrence and Louise Leitheiser; several brothers, and a sister.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at the Inn at Westport in Sioux Falls, that became family.
