Corwin Slagter

 Sibley, IA

     Corwin Slagter age 63 of Sibley, Iowa passed away Sunday, October 26, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.

     Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, October 30, 2020 at the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa with Pastor Tom DeDoes, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery.  There will be no public luncheon following the service.

The service will be Livestreamed on Ocheyedan CRC Facebook Page.

     Visitation will be Thursday, October 29^th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church.

     In lieu of flowers or other memorabilia the family requests gifts to Sanborn Christian School, Ellsworth Public School Ag Department, or World Renew.   

      Social distancing guidelines will be followed and masks are encouraged.

Corwin James Slagter was born on September 25, 1957, to Theodore and Lorraine (Dysktra) Slagter.  He enjoyed his childhood in Prinsburg, Minnesota where he attended Central Minnesota Christian School.  After high school graduation he worked on the Herman Brouwer farm where he developed his passion for farming.  He went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in Ag/Business and teaching at Dordt College.  While attending Dordt he met the love of his life, Pam Van Zanten.  They were married on July 12, 1986.  They had many adventures together including teaching in California, Iowa, and Minnesota.  They were blessed with four children, Anna, Kelly, Corey, and Christopher.  In 1993, Corwin achieved his dream of living on his Grandpa Dykstra’s farm.  The adventures continued with fixing up the farm and striving to be a godly steward of the land.  His love for God, his family, and his students was evident by his actions and words.  Corwin was able to farm and teach at Ellsworth Public School even after a double lung transplant.  But his greatest joy was spending time with his family (especially the grandchildren, aka ‘the little shrimps’).

 Corwin is survived by his wife, Pam, his children, Anna, (Tyler Van Ess), Kelly, Corey, Christopher, grandchildren, Aleah, Theodore, and a new grandchild due in March, mother, Lorraine Vander Veen, siblings, Randy (Carla), Arlyn (Cindy), Judy (Jeff Frikke), Lori (Craig Van Peursem), parents-in-law,  Albert and Harriett Van Zanten, siblings-in-law; Sandy (Verlyn Van Bemmel), Judy (Andy Heim), Allen (Patty), Mike, and Phil (Jen) and many nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Theodore Slagter, and Step-Father Bernard Vander Veen.
