Daniel "Dan" Ray Grote

     Daniel “Dan” Grote age 66 of Ashton, Iowa died Thursday, November 2, 2023, at his home in Ashton.

     Visitation will be Wednesday, November 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Ashton.

      Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley.     

      Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Little Rock, IA.

     In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be directed to Avera @ Home Hospice, 4509 Prince of Peace PL, Sioux Falls, SD 57103.

     Daniel Ray Grote was born September 28, 1957, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Shirlene (Julius) Grote.  He was raised in Little Rock, Iowa and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1975.

     On May 20, 1978, Dan was united in marriage to Mary Gacke.  To this union 2 sons were born, Antone and Christopher.  They lived in Sibley and Ashton, Iowa and later divorced.

     Dan was united in marriage to Susan Keller on July 5, 1996.  Together they lived in Ashton, Iowa. In the past, Dan worked at Sathers in Round Lake, MN, and Sibley Concrete.  He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 36 years, retiring in 2017.  

     Dan was a member of the Ashton Fire Department, the Eagle Riders Club, a past Ashton City Council Member, and an Ashton First Responder.  He enjoyed riding motorcycle, watching old Western movies and TV shows, and listening to old country western music.  He also enjoyed traveling and took memorable trips to Jamaica, Hawaii, Florida, and several trips to Tennessee and Alabama to visit his son Tony. 

     Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 27 years, Sue; sons, Tony Grote of Dansville, AL and Chris (Kristina) Grote of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Dallas, Ethan, Libby, and Emmalee; stepchildren, Shane Langholz of Milford, IA and Nicole Vlaming of Renton, WA; mother, Shirlene Grote of Sibley, IA; siblings, Laura Hoffman of Sibley, IA, Diana (Steve) Lemke of Omaha, NE, Mary Toay of Spencer, IA, Carla (Rich) Croatt of Sibley, IA, and Susan (Bradd) Dreessen of Sibley, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

     He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Grote; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Grote; maternal grandparents, Claus and Anna Julius; parents-in-law, Martin and Helen Vlaming; brothers-in-law, Ron Vlaming and Leroy Hoffman.
