Darwin Van Maasdam age 74, of Ocheyedan, Iowa died Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
A visitation with the family present will be held on Monday, April 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lake Park.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the United Methodist Church in Lake Park, IA with Rev. Sedar Shako, officiating.
Darwin Van Maasdam was born June 15, 1950, at LeMars, IA the son of Casey and Donna (Stevens) Van Maasdam. He grew up in several area communities in northwest Iowa and Southwest Minnesota, including Maurice, Fairfax, Kingsley, IA and Hutchinson, MN before settling in Harris, IA. He graduated from Harris-Lake Park Community School in 1968. In 1970, he met Edna Van Der Wilt in Sibley and they were united in marriage on June 19, 1971. They made their home near Harris for a short time before moving to Lake Park. While in Lake Park, they raised their family. He owned a few businesses over the years, including a filling station, convenience store, car washes in Lake Park and Spirit Lake, and for many years, he owned and operated a trucking company. In 2015, he and Edna moved to Ocheyedan. He enjoyed taking family vacations to the Black Hills, taking snowmobile trips, and playing cards with friends. He was often involved in fixing or tinkering on vehicles and always went out of his way to help others. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Ocheyedan, IA; their sons, Ryan (Kate) Van Maasdam of Spirit Lake, IA; Matt (Rachel) Van Maasdam of Parker, CO; grandchildren Avery and Audrey, Hailey, Jack and Christian; and most recently a great-grandson, Crew; along with his siblings, Stewart Van Maasdam of Spencer, IA; Lucy Lemker of Dike, IA; Colleen Meyer of Milford, IA and Marley Schwarting of Lakefield, MN.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, Casey and Donna.
