David Smythe

     David Smythe, age 73 of Ellsworth, MN, formerly of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, April 20, 2020 at Park View Manor in Ellsworth, MN.

     Due to the mandated health care precautions, a private family graveside service will be held at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA.       

     David “Dave” Dean Smythe was born August 30, 1946 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Richard and Leona (Nagel) Smythe. He attended Central Lyon High School and graduated from in 1963. After his education he joined the U.S. Navy. While serving his country he was stationed the U.S. Aludra in Vietnam. He received his honorable discharge and returned home.

     On November 11, 1968 Dave was united in marriage to Colette Odens. To this union three children were born, Toby, Shauna and Krista. Dave and Colette were later divorced.

     In his spare time Dave enjoyed doing taxidermy, owning the Short Stop, and spending time with family. Dave loved horses, his dog, Scooter, gardening, and fishing.

     Dave is survived by his children, Toby (Barbara) Smythe of Tea, SD, Shauna (Jason) Tweet of Adrian, MN and Krista (Benton) Boom of Tea, SD; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Tom Smythe of Belle Plain, KS and Theodore “Ted” (Linda) Smythe of Rifle, CO.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Leona Smythe; six siblings, Wava June Zoet, Joseph Smythe, Beverly Ann Smythe, George Patrick Smythe, Donald Jerome Smythe and Richard John Smythe.
