Dennis De Vries, age 71, of George, Iowa passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Hope Reformed Church rural George, with Reverend Steven DeHaan officiating.
The burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Dennis Lee De Vries was born on February 2, 1952, in Sibley, IA, the son of Lawrence J. and Irene M. (Walter) De Vries. He was raised on the De Vries family farm east of George, IA. He attended George Community School, active in basketball, football, and track. He graduated from George High School in 1970.
On November 13, 1972, Dennis entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on November 12, 1974. He returned home to help with the family farm. Dennis was united in marriage to Marianne Kay Klaahsen on April 22, 1977, at Hope Reformed Church, near George. Together they lived for a short time in George. They were blessed with three daughters, Jessica, Megan, and Kelsey. They moved to the De Vries family farm in 1990 while Dennis continued to farm and work full time at Sudenga Manufacturing, near George, IA. Later Dennis and Marianne were divorced.
Dennis was a member of the Hope Reformed Church, serving as past Deacon. He also served on the board of the George Elevator and was a member of the Jack Sauter Post No. 404 American Legion of George, IA. Dennis loved being a farmer. He enjoyed watching sports, such as the Green Bay Packer, and watching old western movies. Most of all he enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities.
He will be remembered as an independent, strong-willed man and a loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Megan (husband Brandon) Jewell and their children, Mady, Bentley and Brayden; his daughter, Kelsey (husband Dan) Ries of Sibley, IA and their child, Logan; a sister, Debbie (husband Howard) Hoyme of Waseca, MN; and several other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Irene De Vries; infant daughter, Jessica De Vries; previous wife, Marianne Kay Groen; and a brother, Ted De Vries.
